The South Sea Bubble.?  This innocent and romantic-sounding enterprise lasted from 1711 to 1720
and is the Daddy of all ‘get rich quick’ schemes. 
It was a complicated mishmash based on government debt with MPs paying for advance information -
insider trading on a grand  scale.
When opened to the public, the attraction lay in the promise of easy wealth from trade with
South America. Unfortunately, the company was only interested in issuing more and more stock.  
Rich and poor piled in, encouraging Newton to observe: ‘I can calculate the movement of the
stars but not the madness of men.’
The shrewd Styles took his money before the inevitable collapse - and bought the rundown house
of the widow of the Duke of Monmouth in 1732.
Spending the then vast sum of £130,000 to do it up, Moor Park became the impressive 18th century
mansion we see today: perhaps the best of  its century in Herts.
